Horror at Lake Ng

When researching topics to be used as subject matter for my books & blogs, I seek out illustrations of man’s disregard for human life. In my book, “The Darker Side of Evil,” we take a look at 10 African-American murderers who operated in complete anonymity while destroying communities from the inside out and how the media helped them do it. In each blog post, I’ve examined the lives of serial murderers throughout American history and their crimes against humanity.

There are several adjectives that I may use to describe my personal feelings for these perpetrators and their acts of depravity. Anger, hatred and disgust are a few that immediately come to mind. Three days ago I began researching the exploits of Leonard Lake and Charles Ng; at the end, there was only one word to describe my feelings for the last 72 hours; sheer and utter horror.

Born in Hong Kong on December 24, 1960, Charles Chi-Tat Ng, (Charles Ng) was born to a wealthy corporate executive and his wife.  Throughout his childhood Charles exhibited a compulsion for theft which led to his constant expulsion from various schools throughout his youth and into his teenage years. After moving to the United States as a young man, Ng was involved in a hit and run. To avoid consequences and with the help of a recruiting sergeant that provided falsified documents, Ng; who was not a U.S. citizen, joined the Marine Corp in 1980. After serving less than a year, Ng was charged with,   escape from confinement, attempted desertion andtheft of heavy weaponry. Sentenced to 14 years, Ng’s sentence was commuted and he was dishonorably discharged and released in 1982.

The story of Leonard Lake begins in San Francisco. Born on October 29th of that year young Leonard would be raised by his grandparents from the age of six due to his parents separation. From his youth, Lake exhibited a preoccupation with pornography from a young age, often taking nude photos of his sisters. Encouraged by his grandmother, Lake was said to have participated in sex with his elder sisters regularly until he enlisted into the Marine Corps in 1965.

Lake endured two tours of duty in Vietnam. It was during his time in the service that he was diagnosed with schizoid personality disorder and given a medical discharge in 1971. Obsessed with the “hippie,” lifestyle, Lake lived on communes of such that practiced the ideology of free love throughout the seventies.  During his hippy years Lake would often produce, direct and star in his own porno movies. He also developed the desire to “possess,” slaves. Lake would often make bondage and other deviant sexual behavior an aspect of his self-produced films.  Toward the end of the decade, Lake would eventually be charged and convicted for grand theft. Released from custody in 1980, he soon married Claralyn Balasz, a woman he had met back in 1977. Not long after that he met Charles Ng.

Charles Ng & Leonard Lake
Charles Ng & Leonard Lake

Having the Marine Corp in common the two men developed other shared interests, such as firearms. They began collecting automatic weapons from illegal sources, and a team of federal agents raided their ranch in April 1982, arresting Lake and Ng for firearms violations. Due to his past charge of escape, Ng was denied bail. Lake, however, was granted a $6,000 bond which he posted and skipped on immediately. Lake, using the name Charles Gunnar, floated around northern California. Claralyn Balasz divorced Lake during this time though they remained friends.

Ng would be sentenced and confined at Leavenworth federal penitentiary. Paroled after 18 months, Ng soon resumed his relationship with Lake and moved with him to a cabin owned by the family of Claralyn Balasz in Wilseyville, California. Next to the cabin, Lake constructed a bunker, similar to a dungeon. Within the fortified walls of this dungeon the men kept video equipment and illegal weapons. The men also kept instruments of torture. On this unassuming property, atrocities were committed that would shock society to its core. The actual number of people that these men abducted, tortured, raped and murdered remain unknown still today.

Initially, Lake and then Ng once released; begin killing the neighbors and their families. Lake had already murdered his own brother Donald, who had stopped by for a visit. Acquaintances such as Charles Gunnar had been killed for his money and identity. Rural neighbors Lonnie Bond, his girlfriend Brenda O’Connor and their infant son, Lonnie Jr. had been murdered as well as Harvey and Deborah Dubs and their young son, Sean. In these instances, the men and children were killed immediately. The women were held hostage while being raped and tortured repeatedly.

On June 2, 1985, Ng was spotted shoplifting by a local hardware store clerk. The clerk immediately notified authorities, however, when they arrived, Ng had left the premises. The clerk informed the responding officer that the white Honda Prelude that the thief had arrived in still remained in the lot. In the car sat Leonard Lake and when confronted by the officers, Lake identified himself to them as Robin Stapley and had a driver’s license in that name. The initial search of the vehicle turned up the vise Ng had stolen as well as a .22 caliber revolver with a silencer. The officers ran the car to find that it was registered to a Paul Costner. Both Robin Stapley and Paul Costner had been previously reported missing. Lake was placed under arrest and transported to the police station.

At the station, Lake confessed his real name and that he was a wanted fugitive. He also told authorities that the name of the shoplifter was Charles Ng. After requesting a cup of water Lake was found convulsing and foaming from the mouth. It was found later that Lake swallowed a cyanide pill that had been taped to his shirt lapel.

During the search of the vehicle police noticed several blood stains throughout the car. Noticed also were several shell casings as well as a bullet hole in the interior of the vehicle. Within the glove box several ID’s and credit cards in different names were found along with utility bills for the cabin in Wilseyville in name of Claralyn Balasz.

Police contacted Claralyn Balasz about the discovery and questioned her concerning Ng. After some prodding, she eventually admitted taking Ng to run various errands and dropping Ng. off at the airport. Balasz also agreed to take officers to the cabin in Wilseyville.

The following day, Balasz accompanied by Lake’s mother, Gloria Eberling at a grocery store located on Highway 88 a short distance from the cabin. The ladies led the officers up Blue Mountain road to the cabin. As they approached the officers felt an ominous presence come over them as they gazed upon the structure comprised of cement blocks next to the small cabin. The cabin consisted simply of two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom. Upon entering, the officers immediately noticed a blood-like spray on the wall. Spotted next was a small caliber bullet hole in the wall and one in the floor of the kitchen. The master bedroom held a four-poster bed that had electrical cords tied to each of its posts. Bolted through the floor at each corner of the bed were heavy eyebolts and above it, a 250-watt floodlight had been fastened to the wall.

The officers then found lingerie of assorted sizes and types; all with blood stains. Throughout the house was video equipment, all registered to a person named Harvey Dubs. Unbeknownst to the officer at that time, Dubs, his wife and child; had been missing since July 24, 1984. They had been last seen at the cabin by neighbors.

The law enforcement officials immediately left to obtain a search warrant for the rest of the property. As they waited on the warrant, officers returned to the property and conducted a brief interview with Balasz and Eberling. Fearing possible implication, the women stubbornly refused to answer any of the officers questions. Aware that a tremendous evil had been committed on this property the officers asked Balasz for permission to open the bunker. Her advice to them was to take it up with Mr. Ng.

The following day, Tuesday, June 4, 1985, a full search of the property was authorized. A task force comprised of several officers was assembled to conduct the search. San Francisco police chief, Cornelius Murphy, authorized a twelve-man unit and Sheriff Ballard of Calaveras County assembled a team of five men and placed Lieutenant Bob Bunning in charge. Deputy Chief of Inspectors Joseph Lordan was placed in charge of the San Francisco detachment. As they began the search around the bunker officers noticed a trench which seemed to contain clothing coming from underground, all with a top coat of lye.

Noticing that a nearby house seemed abandoned, officers contacted the landlord of the property, Bo Carter. During an interview Mr. Carter told officers that when he had recently come to collect rent from his tenants he was greeted by a man claiming his name was Charles Gunnar. The man explained to Carter that the tenants, Lonnie Bond, his partner Brenda O’Connor, their infant son Lonnie Jr. and another man named Robin Stapley had abruptly moved ten days prior. Carter also informed officers that an eroded bank near the boundary between the two properties had been recently dug up.

The officers entered the bunker. The main room was a twenty-foot by twelve-foot workshop area with a range of hand tools and power saws hanging on a plywood wall next to a workbench. The tools were found to be encrusted with a dried brownish substance, possibly blood. They soon found that the plywood tool rack was in fact a door leading to a smaller room. Inside were a double bed, a side table, books and a reading lamp. On one wall was a wooden plaque with the legend “Operation Miranda” carved into it. The room also contained military equipment including uniforms, boots and a vast array of weapons, including assault rifles, shotguns and machine guns. On the floor, police found a work shirt and a baseball cap with the words “Dennis Moving Service” embroidered on them. Forensic technicians recovered several fingerprints from the weapons and tools, prints that were later positively identified as belonging to Ng and Lake.

Outside investigators recovered two bones beside the driveway. Initially unsure if they were human, the question would soon be answered as a deputy found a human foot protruding from the ground. The grounds of the ranch were dug up and 12 corpses were uncovered in shallow graves. With the help of sheriff’s canine dogs they uprooted some fifty pounds of human skeletons and fragmented bones, teeth and partial remains of missing men, women and children. Among these victims were two families: Harvey Dubs and his wife, Deborah, and baby son, Sean; and Lonnie Bond and Brenda O’Connor and their baby son, Lonnie Bond Jr. The women had been sexually abused and killed after their husbands and infants were disposed of. Five of the bodies were of men lured to the ranch to be robbed and killed including Robin Stapley and Paul Cosner.   Another corpse was identified as 18-year-old Kathleen Allen, who knew Ng because her boyfriend had once been his cellmate in prison. Investigators continued to uncover one horror after another as more skeletons were sorted out of scattered fragments.

Police also found an incinerator with thick fireproof walls that were capable of withstanding extreme temperatures. Within this apparatus were charred fragments of human bones (in excess of 45 pounds in total), but they were unable to determine the identity of the victims or their number. Additionally, the state attorney urged the public to help identify 15 bodies that had been uprooted on the ranch grounds.

Later, a sealed five gallon bucket was uncovered which contained a check book in the name of Robin Scott Stapley, jewelry, credit cards, driver’s licenses, wallets and two videotapes without labels and a third marked “M. Ladies Kathy/Brenda.”  The first two videos were later viewed, the first showing Lake and Balasz at a Thanksgiving dinner.  On the second, Lake had been filmed discussing his greatest fantasy – kidnapping a woman and enslaving her.  The third video was the most disturbing; it showed a young woman, identified as 18-year-old Kathleen Allen, chained to a chair and later forced to perform a striptease while being taunted by Lake and Ng.  In another part of the video, Ng could be seen clearly cavorting on a bed with Kathy while Lake took still photographs. The tape also included footage of Brenda O’Connor begging for information regarding her baby.  In answer, Lake tells her “Your baby is sound asleep, like a rock.”  Eventually, when the constant barrage of taunts and threats breaks her resolve, Brenda agrees to cooperate.  Later in the tape she can be heard taking a shower with both men. On tape, Lake was heard to say, “By cooperating with us, that means you will stay here as a prisoner, you will work for us, you will wash for us, you will fuck for us. Or you can say no, in which case we’ll tie you to the bed, we’ll rape you, and then we’ll take you outside and shoot you. Your choice!”

Inside the cabin, between blood soaked mattresses officers found a diary written by Leonard Lake that described in chilling detail how he and Ng had selected, raped, and murdered numerous victims. His diary was crammed with sexual fantasies involving sex slaves he planned to keep in his bunker after a nuclear holocaust. He wrote: “God meant woman for cooking, cleaning house and sex. And when they are not in use, they should be locked up.” On another page he scribbled, “If you love something, let it go. If it doesn’t come back, hunt it down and kill it.” No one knows how many people Lake killed during his lifetime, but it is thought that his first victim was his brother, Donald.

Leonard Lake escaped prosecution, having died by ingesting the cyanide pill. Ng caught a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Chicago; from there his whereabouts were unknown. His location remained a mystery until July 6, 1985. On that date Ng was arrested while shoplifting food from a market in Calgary, Alberta.  On November 29, 1988, a Canadian judge ruled that Ng should be extradited to California for trial. Legal maneuvers stalled his extradition until 1991. By firing and hiring court appointed attorneys, Ng was able to delay the commencement of his trial until August 21, 1998. In the longest and most expensive trial in California history, Charles Ng was convicted of 12 counts of murder in February 1999. On May 3, 1999 Charles Ng was sentenced to death and currently resides on death row at San Quentin State Prison. To date there is no actual count of the victims of Charles Ng and Leonard Lake.

In The Beginning, There Was …………. Ed Gein

Most of us are familiar with the movie, “Silence of The Lambs,” and the character, killer Buffalo Bill. Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and similar horror movie characters, have scared us into a box office frenzy. During the prologue and epilogue of the horror classic, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” we see the phrase, “based on actual events.” The mere idea that any of these occurrences may have actually taken place is enough to shake the average person to their core. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it; there was not a family of cannibals in Texas that used human meat in their chili recipes.  However, all of these stories do have something in common. These as well as most modern slasher flicks were created based loosely on the life and acts of one man, Ed Gein.

Ed Gein
Ed Gein

Born August 27, 1906, researching Ed Gein was a true excursion into the macabre. Raised on a farm in Plainfield, Wisconsin, Ed experienced a peculiar relationship with his mother Augusta. Augusta Gein taught her two boys, Edward and Henry that all women (except herself) were naturally prostitutes and instruments of the devil; similar to the mother/son relationship depicted in the motion picture franchise, “Psycho.” During their youth, the Gein boys were allowed to leave the farm for the sole purpose of attending school as she demanded their presence, (especially that of Ed) constantly. Augusta, a strict and overbearing woman, openly and regularly belittled her husband George in the presence of Ed and Henry. George Gein was an alcoholic and seldom remained employed for any considerable amount of time. Augusta hated her husband and felt that her children were destined to follow in his footsteps.

In May of 1944, Henry and Ed were burning trash. As the two men worked the fire got out of control and drew the immediate attention of the local fire department. Working feverishly, the firemen soon extinguish the blaze. After all the smoke is cleared, Ed finds that his brother Henry is now missing. With the assistance of several sheriffs’ deputies, a search is begun for the missing Henry Gein. Late that evening his body is found face down in the brush. Initially, due to the lack of any visible injuries, it was thought that Henry died due to heart failure and paperwork was officially documented death from natural causes. However, though it was never publicized, bruises were later found on Henry’s head leading some investigators to believe that Ed had actually killed Henry.  This would not be the last time Ed Gein was suspected of murder.

After the passing of Henry, the relationship between Ed and Augusta become more and more strange. Ed also develops an interest in the occult. He began purchasing books, items and relics relating to death cults, cannibalism and Nazis. In 1945 Augusta has a stroke, soon followed by a second; on December 29, 1945, Augusta Gein died. It was at this time that Ed Gein would depart on a one way journey into depravity.

Between 1947 and 1957 several disappearances occurred in and around Plainfield. Witnesses also claim that Ed Gein was seen countless times visiting various cemeteries in the area. The mystery surrounding the activities of Ed Gein would come to light with the 1957 disappearance of Plainfield hardware store owner Bernice Worden. Worden’s son told investigators that Gein was the last person in the store the evening before the disappearance, saying he would return the next morning for a gallon of anti-freeze. A register receipt confirmed that Gein indeed return for the anti-freeze in the morning and Worden had not been seen since.

After obtaining a warrant to search Gein’s property, investigators found Worden’s decapitated body in a shed, hung upside down by ropes at her wrists, with a crossbar at her ankles. She had been gutted like an animal that had been hunted.  Officers then searched the home of Ed Gein; below is a list of what was found:

  • Four noses
  • Whole human bones and fragments
  • Nine masks of human skin
  • Bowls made from human skulls
  • Ten female heads with the tops sawn off
  • Human skin covering several chair seats
  • Mary Hogan’s head in a paper bag
  • Bernice Worden’s head in a burlap sack
  • Nine vulvae in a shoe box
  • A belt made from female human nipples
  • Skulls on his bedposts
  • A pair of lips on a drawstring for a window shade
  • A lampshade made from the skin of a human face
  • Shrunken heads human facial skins, carefully peeled from corpses and used by Gein as masks

During questioning Gein told investigators that since his mother’s death, he had decided that he wanted to be a woman. He then struck upon the idea of creating a woman suit out of the skin of female carcasses. He confessed to digging up the graves of recently buried middle-aged women he thought resembled his mother. Gein would rob the graves, take the bodies home, skin and tan the hides to create his suit. Of the disappearances, Gein would admit to the murders of Bernice Worden and Mary Hogan only. Investigators site the reason for his admission to these murders as due to their heads being found in his possession.

On November 21, 1957 the trial of Ed Gein began. He was found at the time to be legally insane and unfit to stand trial. Gein was sent to the Central State Hospital for the Criminally Insane until 1968 when was determined he was sane enough to stand trial. He was found guilty of one count of first degree murder but also diagnosed as legally insane due to schizophrenia and spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital. On July 26, 1984, Gein died of respiratory failure at the Mendota Mental Health Institute.

The Dysfunctional Family of Marcus Wesson

As a son, a father, a brother and a husband; I know and respect the value of family. With my last contributions we took a look at women evil enough to hurt innocent children. Now we will take a look at familicide. Familicide is a type of murder or murder-suicide in which at least one spouse and one or more children are killed. Imagine a home on your block; on Wednesday the family unit is seen participating in normal family activities.  However, on Thursday morning the same house is taped off by the police and body bags are being loaded into vans as neighbors look on in disbelief. Such is the post familicide setting.

Chris Benoit
Chris Benoit

The most publicized incident of familicide in recent years was that of the June 25, 2007; murder/ suicide of professional wrestler Chris Benoit and the Benoit family. Over a three-day period, Benoit had killed his wife and son before hanging himself. Ironically, I was headed to Georgia to see my family during that time and as a ChrisBenoit fan the incident truly hit home.

As I researched more cases under this topic, I came across one of the most disturbing men that I have ever read about. I was not familiar with Marcus Wesson or his exploits but at the end of my investigation, I knew that the world needed to know about this individual.

Marcus Deion Wesson was born in Kansas on August 22, 1946. In the early 60’s, after a normal childhood, Wesson dropped out of high school and joined the Army.  Upon his return from his Europeanbased military service, Wesson began having an affair with a married Rosemary Solorio in San Jose. Solorio eventually left her husband to begin a life with Wesson who moved in with her and her children.

In 1971, Solorio gave birth to Wesson’s first son; Wesson at the time was attempting to have a relationship with Solorio’s daughter Elizabeth. Wesson told Elizabeth that God had chosen her to be his “new wife,” and in 1974 Wesson performed a mock wedding between him and the 9 year old Elizabeth. The thirty-something Wesson began abusing Elizabeth sexually when she turned 12. The two legally married after her 15th birthday and she went on to bear 10 children for Wesson.

The abusive Wesson did not allow Elizabeth to participate in the upbringing of their children. Elizabeth’s sister left her seven children in the care of Wesson and Elizabeth, citing that she could no longer care for them. Wesson home schooled the children, teaching them out of a bible that he had written himself. Within the pages of this bible Wesson taught his children that Jesus Christ was a vampire as well as other embellishments that he used to lay the foundation of his wicked intentions. He demanded that the children refer to him as “Lord” or “Master” and taught them that he was God.

Marcus Wesson

Wesson never held a job for any considerable amount of time, therefore he and the children often lived in run-down shacks, boats, and vacant houses while relying heavily upon welfare as the primary source of income. Wesson continued his blasphemous teachings; instructing the children to be prepared for the upcoming Armageddon. As he had done to Elizabeth, Wesson would teach the girls that they were to become his wives. Fearing that his authority may one day be undermined and to quell any sexual feelings that they may develop for each other, he separated the boys from the girls. For several months the boys stay in a shack in a heavily wooded area and the girls on a rundown boat. Wesson sexually abused at least three of his nieces and two of his own daughters. Each of them forced to participate in a mock wedding around their seventh through ninth birthdays. All of the five girls would become pregnant by Wesson; frightened by Wesson with threats of harm against them and their children if they were to admit the paternity of their children, these girls would endure the abuse in silence. In total Wesson fathered up to 18 children with 7 women including the 5 girls.

On March 12, 2004, several members of Wesson’s non-immediate family insisted upon the release of the children/grandchildren and the end of his incestuous relations with his children. The outside demands initiated a coup of sorts within the Wesson family compound in Fresno. As the disturbance escalated, police were called to the scene and the incident was initially handled as a domestic disturbance.  During the confusion Wesson disappeared into the house for approximately 80 minutes. Afterwards Wesson reappeared with blood soaked clothing and officers stampeded through the door.

The officers ran into a pitch dark room. Feeling along the walls for a light switch, other officers cast their flashlights onto a mass in the middle of the room floor. Finally, a light switch was flipped and what was next seen looked like something from a horror movie. There was a pile of bodies on the floor, babies, kids, young women. Nine total. Blood pooled around them on the ground. As the officers searched for any signs of life they made notice that each victim had been shot through the eye. Also found in the room were several antique coffins.

Marcus Wesson's coffins
Marcus Wesson’s coffins

During the investigation Wesson told officers of the suicide pact that had been made long before this date. Shortly after they moved into the Fresno home, Wesson purchased 12 mahogany coffins at an antique store. He had instructed his older children that in the event of authorities attempting to remove the children, they were to first murder their offspring before killing themselves. He would stay alive to explain their decision to the public, according to the plan. When Wesson disappeared into the house, he was terminating the lives of the children that the others couldn’t bring themselves to kill.

Wesson’s trial began in June of 2005. During this time the exact nature of Wesson’s incestuous behavior came to light. According to Wesson’s defense, it was Sebhrenah Wesson that held the .22-caliber Ruger Mark II pistol to the eye of each child and squeezed the trigger before killing her sister Elizabeth and her herself. The defense used this in an attempt to cast doubt concerning the guilt of Marcus Wesson. The prosecution argued that Wesson was ultimately guilty of the massacre, because he’d primed his children to kill and be killed. The jury concurred and on June 17, 2005, Wesson was found guilty of nine counts of first-degree murder as well as 14 counts of forcible sexual assault and the sexual molestation of seven of his daughters and nieces. Marcus Deion Wesson was sentenced to death on June 27, 2005.

As I close this post, the normal question of why doesn’t come to mind. The question that does come to mind is how. How can one be so wicked as to sexually abuse anyone, much less his own child? I look down upon my own children, as they sleep, with an immeasurable amount of love. However, I look upon the world in which I live with a sense of disdain; knowing that I share the planet with monsters such as Marcus Deion Wesson.

Searching for Keyes to Unsolved Murders; Law Enforcement Look to Israel for Answers

While enjoying bagels and coffee, serial killer, Israel Keyes would tell a sordid tale of crime that range from bank robbery to rape and murder. On July 10, 2012, the serial killer sat in an Alaskan police interview room and told a twisted story of an army veteran who idolized Ted Bundy and killed for the sheer thrill of it. Most importantly, Keyes enlightened law enforcement as to exactly how he chose then stalked and killed his victims, and how he was able to get away with murder for so long.

Israel Keyes
Israel Keyes

Born in Richmond, Utah in 1978, Keyes enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1998 and served until 2001. It was during this period that Keyes began his career in murder. Keyes’ first victims were in Washington State in the late 1990s. During the interrogation, Keyes admitted to investigators that he killed four people in Washington State. The claims made are the subject of an active investigation by the FBI as well as police in that state.

Keyes noted that those murders were not his first violent crime. The earliest crime to which Keyes admitted was the violent sexual assault of a teenage girl in Oregon, sometime between 1996 and 1998. He did not elaborate on the details of this incident, he did mention, however, that he did, “let her live.” He began his interview with the line, “When I was smart,” and told officers of the existence of “two” Israel Keyes. The first being the man that people thought that they knew, the likeable easy-going Keyes. The Israel Keyes that was an army veteran, carpenter and father of a 10 year old daughter, is the man that most would claim to know. Then there was the Keyes that was an alcoholic and loner. The Israel Keyes obsessed with the exploits of Ted Bundy; and has claimed to have stalked and murdered at least 12 people in his life time.

Unlike most serial killers, Keyes planned murders long ahead of time and took extraordinary action to avoid detection. He would travel the country; logging tens of thousands of miles to find and stalk potential victims. Keyes viewed America as one big killing field. A carpenter by trade, Keyes admitted that his hobby of murder brought him a rush like nothing else he had ever experienced.

To finance his murderous endeavors, Keyes took to robbing banks. During the interview Keyes admitted to robbing several banks throughout New York State. He confessed to committing at least one murder during his time in New York, though he could not recall the identity, age, or gender of the victim, or when and where the murder may have occurred. Even without the “specifics,” of the case law enforcement consider the admission to be credible. FBI later confirmed that Keyes robbed the Community Bank branch in Tupper Lake, New York in April 2009, giving credence to the possibility of the rest of his story.

Evidence links Keyes to the murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vermont. The Vermont couple was last seen after leaving work in June, 2011. Keyes reportedly broke into the Curriers’ home on the night of June 8th and tied them up before driving to an abandoned farmhouse, where he shot Bill Currier before sexually assaulting and strangling Lorraine Currier. He then put the Curriers in separate garbage bags; facts are unclear from that point as their bodies have never been found. Keyes actually had identified the couple as potential victims two years earlier. It was during this time that he had hidden a “murder kit,” near their home. When he was ready to kill the Curriers, Keyes, in order to avoid any manner of detection, flew into Chicago and rented a car to drive some 1000 miles to Vermont, retrieved the kit consisting of a hand gun and various supplies and murdered the couple.

Keyes admitted to the investigators that he never had a particular victim type or profile. He would never kill close to his residence. He always killed far from home, and maintained that he had no prior connection to any of his victims. Keyes was adamant about never killing in the same area twice. He giddily told the officers of the thrill he derived by blending into the landscapes of faraway towns and watching potential victims.

Samantha Koenig
Samantha Koenig

Keyes’ last known murder was the kidnapping and murder of 18-year-old Samantha Koenig. A barista in Anchorage, Alaska, Keyes kidnapped Koenig on February 1, 2012, from her place of employment.  After the kidnapping Keyes demanded $30,000 in ransom for her return. With no intention of permitting her to live, Keyes sexually assaulted Koenig then murdered her. Leaving Koenig’s body in a shed Keyes departed from his home. When he returned home, Keyes proceeded to dismember Koenig and disposed of her body in Matanuska Lake north of Anchorage. Abandoning hope of the ransom being met, Keyes stole her debit card and other property and left on a cruise out of New Orleans.  Police tracked withdrawals from the account as Keyes moved throughout the American Southwest. Ironically, Koenig was not reported missing until February 2 after snow had covered any traces of the abduction.

Law enforcement traced the use of Samantha Koenig’s debit and credit cards through New Mexico, Arizona and into Texas. Keyes was subsequently apprehended in Lufkin, Texas on the morning of March 13, 2012. On April 2, 2012, two months after her disappearance, the body of Samantha Koenig was pulled from the lake. Later that month, Keyes was extradited to Alaska to await trial, scheduled to begin in March, 2013.

During this interview with law enforcement Keyes confessed to the murder of Koenig and other crimes that he’d committed across the country. Facing possible execution, Keyes may have hoped to plea-bargain a life sentence in return for his confessions, though he never requested such an arrangement. He admitted that there was no voice within him that compelled him to kill. He did so out of the sheer thrill of committing the act of murder. Throughout the interrogation, Keyes admitted to at least 12 murders; all of which carry a level of credibility. As he spoke, major cold-case investigations were quietly launched in Seattle and elsewhere.  Investigators calculate that within his 15 year “active,” span, he may be the key to solving many more unsolved murders. The truth depths of Israel Keyes’ depravity will never be known. While being held in jail at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on suspicion of murder, Keyes committed suicide on December 2, 2012, via self-inflicted wrist cuts and strangulation.

Definitely Not The Farm Old McDonald Had

During my periods of incarceration, I’ve found myself, on several occasions, in the company of individuals that I thought were the embodiment of pure evil. As I sat in the dining halls and day rooms, I listened to men tell stories of street life and give graphic accounts of murderous events that have taken place on the underbelly of society. Regardless of how vile and disturbing the stories passed around behind prison walls were, they pale in comparison to the horror I discovered during the research for this post.

Until recently, I had never heard the term, “baby farm,” before.  Also, until recently that is, I had always considered infants exempt from violent crime. True, periodically you would have an isolated case of violence of some sort toward a baby, but it wasn’t commonplace. The truth is; you don’t realize how much you don’t know until you learn something.

During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, baby farming was a popular form of income in Europe, Great Britain and the United States. Baby farming meant the taking in of an infant or child for payment. Women would advertise themselves as a child care provider and take in as many infants and children as they could. baby farmers were paid in the understanding that care would be provided. Some baby farmers “adopted” children for lump-sum payments, while others cared for infants for periodic payments. In the case of lump-sum adoptions, it was more profitable for the baby farmer if the infant or child she adopted died, since the small payment could not cover the care of the child for long.

Children born out of wedlock, divorced mothers and poverty stricken families often brought unwanted children to these places. Mistresses of married men were forced to place their babies in these farms to conceal their affairs. The black market sale of babies and children was prevalent during this period also. Acquired through baby farms, crooked social services workers or simply kidnapped, infants were regularly sold to wealthy families. If a child could not be sold or pimped out to community pedophiles they were neglected to the point of death or simply murdered outright. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances regarding the child’s conception, the mother could not appeal to authorities concerning the whereabouts of her child. To do so would cause the woman a great deal of shame and ridicule; illegitimate births were frowned upon heavily during that era. If the parent did return to claim the child, the “farmer,” would tell them that the baby died of natural causes or taken by a social services worker. Usually, simply threatening to expose the infidelity of the woman and her lover to the community was enough to quell any investigation

Baby farms, black market adoption houses and child procurers caused the child mortality rate to skyrocket during this period as infants were murdered by the thousands. Of the hundreds of baby murderers of this period, three caught my attention as the most sadistic: Amelia Dyer, (England), Marianne Skoublinska, (Poland) and Enriqueta Martí, (Spain).

Amelia Dyer 1
Amelia Dyer

Amelia Dyer was born in 1837 and earned the title of the most prolific baby farm murderer of Victorian England. A nurse by trade she began using her home to house infants of young women who had conceived illegitimately. Fathers of illegitimate children had no financial obligation to the child or mothers during this time which left the mothers in desperate need of housing and child care. Dyer portrayed herself to be a kind woman that would provide a safe and loving home for the child. She would advertise to nurse and adopt a baby, in return for a substantial one-off payment and adequate clothing for the child. In reality, Dyer would farm off the babies for adoption while allowing the rest to die of neglect and malnutrition. Eventually Dyer took to murdering each child herself which allowed her to keep most, if not all of the fees. Dyer ran her business unnoticed until a doctor made note of the number of infant deaths in her establishment. The authorities were alerted and Dyer was arrested and convicted; not of murder, but of neglect. Dyer was sentenced to 6 months hard labor.

Upon her release, Dyer resumed her murderous career. Learning from her mistake of involving doctors, Dyer would now dispose of the bodies of murdered infants herself. Over the years, Dyer would attract the attention of the police several times. Each time they would get close, she would fake a nervous breakdown, relocate her business and take up an alias name to work under. After several bodies of infants began to surface, each linking to Dyer in some manner, authorities devised a plan using a decoy mother to set Dyer up. The plan was successful and as Dyer sat, expecting a distraught mother to show up, the police came and searched her premises. As they entered the home, the stench of death overtook many of the officers. No bodies of infants were found, however, authorities did find direct evidence linking Dyer to the murder of at least 20 infants. Estimates conclude that after decades of being in business Dyer was responsible for at least 400 deaths of infants and children. Amelia Dyer was found guilty of murder and on Wednesday, 10 June 1896, she was hanged at Newgate Prison in London, England.

Marianne Skoublinska was a Polish murderess that operated her baby farm in the late nineteenth and centuries. Not much is known about Skoublinska and her baby farming business. What is known is that in the late 1800’s, Madame Skoublinska left the baby farming business to begin a lucrative career in post pregnancy infant disposal, or after birth abortions. It seems that a parent or parents of unwanted infants paid Skoublinska to destroy the baby.

It is unknown exactly how long she operated this business, but in 1890 the public learned of the sinister livelihood of Marianne Skoublinska. Police and firefighters were called to a fire at her place of residence. As the fire was extinguished bodies of five children were found, not in bed but buried in various sections of the home. During the autopsy the physician determined the these children had not perished as a result of the fire but had received life ending injuries previous to the fire being set, one of which bore distinct traces of the skull having been battered in. Skoublinska was immediately placed under arrest.

During the investigation and trial the true horror of this woman’s deeds were exposed. As the police questioned neighbors they found that Skoublinska had only resided in that particular home for four months. As they dug for evidence in rubble of Skoublinska’s home, it is said that fifty bodies of children were found. Neighbors also testified of Skoublinska’s boasts of having the fattest, healthiest hogs in the district on account of the exceptionally good feed she provided for them. The truth was, she often Marianne Skoublinska 1threw the bodies of babies to the hogs to be devoured.

Marianne Skoublinska stood accused of the murder of 76 infants and children. She was charged with setting fire to her cottage, containing the bodies of five little children, in order destroy evidence and collect on the insurance on her property. At the trial it was established that not a single child who was entrusted to her care and entered her den ever left her house alive. It was also shown that she charged two different amounts for, “taking care” of children, fifteen roubles for allowing the baby to die in a few weeks, and twenty for killing the baby within a day or two. Despite the overwhelming amount of evidence against her, Marianne Skoublinska could not be convicted of murder and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Enriqueta Martí was never a baby farmer; but she was a prostitute, kidnapper, procuress of children, pedophile, cannibal and child murderer. Born in 1868, Marti

Enriqueta Marti
Enriqueta Marti

made an attempt at normal domestic life however, the seedier side of Barcelona, Spain attracted her and she became a prostitute. During the day she would dress as a homeless person, begging for hand outs and looking for children that seemed lost or abandoned. When she found a child she wanted she would take them by the hand and lead them where she wanted. The child was normally pimped out to area pedophiles then murdered the child later that evening.

Eventually her dreams of socializing with Spain’s elite came true. Her pimping and prostituting gave her the income necessary to live well and attend all of the gala events where the wealthy of Barcelona gathered. It is probable that in these places she offered her services as procurer of children. It was her connections with the wealthy that enabled her to continually operate a brothel that made whores of children aged 3 to 13. Though she had been arrested for operating such a business, Enriqueta was never tried and the matter of the brothel was lost in the judicial and bureaucratic system.

Marti was also a practitioner of black magic and considered a witch doctor. The ingredients she used to make her remedies were made from the remains of murdered children. Ranging from infants up to children of 9 years,  she used everything that she could; the fat, blood, hair, and bones (that normally she turned into powder). For this reason, she did not have problems disposing of the bodies of her victims. Marti sold salves, ointments, filters, cataplasms and potions all of which were supposedly cures for diseases and ailments which had no cure at the time. Wealthy people of Barcelona paid large sums of money for these remedies.

The true number of children taken by Marti is unknown. Over a twenty year span experts theorize that Enriqueta Martí may be the most dangerous serial killer in the history of Spain. During her years of operation in Barcelona the public suspected that someone was kidnapping babies. Throughout this period there were many children who disappeared without a trace and the fear among the population was crippling.

On February 10, 1912 Marti kidnapped her last victim, Teresita Guitart Congost. On February 17th, a neighbor of Marti, Claudia Elías, saw a little girl playing with another child through the window of Marti’s home.  Elias, having never seen the children before, asked Marti about them. Marti gave know response and began to keep all curtains to her home closed. A child fitting the little girl’s description had been reported missing; Elias, finding Marti’s behavior peculiar, reported her suspicions to a neighborhood businessman and to the authorities. Under the guise of a chicken inspection, law enforcement gained entry to the house and found the two girls. One in fact was the missing Teresita.

During questioning, the other child; Angelina, gave a frightening testimony. She told of another child, a boy named Pepito. Unbeknownst to Marti, she had witnessed Marti kill Pepito on the kitchen table. She explained how Marti dismembered Pepito, “like a chicken,” the little girl described. The girls further told authorities about how they themselves were lured away from their parents by Marti promising candies to them. After questioning the girls were returned to their homes.

During the investigation, authorities searched Marti’s current home as well as two of her previous places of residence. From their searches they found countless jars containing parts of children. In hidden rooms they found fifty pitchers, jars and washbowls with preserved human remains: greasy lard, coagulated blood, children’s hair, skeletons of hands, powdered bones and pots with the potions, ointments and salves already prepared for sale. Throughout the walls and ceilings of the homes were skeletons of infants and young children. Authorities also recovered blood soaked bags; some containing children’s clothing while others contained small human bones.

Enriqueta was imprisoned in the “Reina Amàlia” jail to await judgement. She tried to commit suicide by slashing her wrists with a knife of wood. Fearing that a successful suicide attempt by Marti would cause a riot among the community who wanted to see Marti tried and executed, she was put on 24 hour watch by other inmates. It would be those inmates that killed Marti while in prison custody. The death of Enriqueta robbed authorities of the opportunity to completely expose all of her secrets. The kidnapper and murderer died the early morning of May 12, 1913.

As a result of these women and murderers like them, laws were put in place around the world to protect children. One thing for certain, when driving through rural areas, I will never look at farms the same again.

Exposure to a Georgia Tann is Deadly for Children

The primary target of male serial murderers is women. Recently I’ve become curious about the existence of female serial killers and their tendencies. Though some women kill their husbands or significant others in a fit of passion or rage, the focus of many female serial killers are children.

Georgia Tann

In the early to mid 1900’s, children became very profitable to those wicked enough to use their innocence for their own vile motives. Many used children in their sweat shops, forcing children to work ungodly hours for little or no pay. Others pimped children out to pedophiles willing to pay top dollar to live out their sickest fantasies with a child. Regardless of the purpose; if someone wanted a child, one of the biggest child brokers of the day was Georgia Tann.

Born July 18, 1891, Georgia Tann would reap untold millions by kidnapping and selling children from 1920-195o. The same woman is responsible for the murder of children; her death toll may number in the thousands.

As a young adult Tann began her career in social work, it was during this period when her warped views of wealth and parenting began to take shape. Employed at the Mississippi Children’s Home-Finding Society, she began to view wealthy people as the higher type and poverty stricken women as “breeders” often referring to the women as cows. She convinced herself and others that that poor people were incapable of proper parenting.

In 1920, Tann began her career as a baby snatcher. Her father, who was a judge, would sign papers deeming poor mothers as unfit parents thereby enabling Georgia Tann to “legally” remove a child from the birth parents and sell the innocent to the highest bidder. In 1924, Tann moved to Tennessee and began working for the Tennessee Children’s Home Society, where she turned part-time baby snatching into big business.

Shortly after her relocation to Tennessee she became an acquaintance of Memphis’s corrupt and powerful mayor, Edward Hull Crump. With the help of the mayor, Georgia eventually set up her own orphanage. Tann and her lesbian partner, Ann Atwood Hollinsworth, began selling children around the country to anyone willing to pay her price, often receiving as much as $100,000 in today’s money for babies. In Memphis, most of Tann’s crimes were accomplished with the aid of Memphis Family Court Judge Camille Kelley. Just as her father did in Mississippi, Judge Kelley would facilitate the removal of a child from its birth parents simply with the stroke of a pen. In other cases, single parents would drop off their children at nursery – when they came back to collect them, they would be told they had been taken away by welfare officers. Tann was also documented as taking children born to unwed mothers at birth, claiming that the newborns required medical care. When the mothers asked about the children, Tann told them that the babies had died, when they were actually placed in foster homes or adopted.

Georgia Tann dealt with only white children. Blonde hair and blue eyes brought the highest price. She lied about the child’s intellect and health to fit the adoptive parent’s desires. Tann would alter the children’s records and falsify birth certificates to make them more appealing to prospective adopters.

People ordered children as if they were ordering furniture, and Tann gladly supplied the demands, charging astronomical figures. She sold children to known molesters, abusers, for labor (one child toiled in a field at 18 hour days, eventually running away). She sold a baby to replace a dead baby. If the adoptive family angered her or would not bend to her extortive demands, she would remove the child. Records indicate that Georgia Tann sold well over 5000 children and killed hundreds more.

The children that Tann could not place were simply discarded like waste. Once deceased, the tiny corpses were simply buried in the yard. So many children died while in Tann’s care that at one point, the infant mortality rate in Memphis, TN was highest in the country and many more deaths were never reported. Many children died as a result of neglect and abuse; in 1945 it is estimated 40-50 children died in less than four months while housed in the illegally operated home. Children were starved, beaten, molested, mentally abused, and received no medical attention. Infants were kept in appalling conditions in suffocating heat. Some were sedated until they could be sold. Many were ill. In public, Georgia Tann spoke out loudly against child abuse, baby selling, corruption, and advocated child welfare reform.  Privately, Tann preyed on young girls, sexually, physically, and mentally abusing her charges.

By 1940, alerted by the rising infant mortality rate in the city, some people were on to Tann. By 1950, officials began a long-overdue investigation into Tann’s business. State investigator Robert Taylor reported the horror of what had taken place at Tann’s orphanage, saying: ‘Her babies died like flies.’ As authorities closed in on her dealings, cancer was ravaging Tann’s body. Conveniently for the corrupt politicians who had collaborated in her black market baby trade, Tann was too sick to be questioned about her crimes. Georgia Tann  and her allies would never see justice in this life. On September 15, 1950, she died of cancer.

The Georgia Tann/Tennessee Children’s Home Society scandal resulted in adoption reform laws in Tennessee in 1951.

A Solution To Violent Crime-Parental Guidance Suggested

I would be remiss if not a full blown hypocrite if I did not address the acts of depravity committed daily here in my own city. The word depravity means moral corruption or wickedness. What act of moral corruption or wickedness is there greater than that of a parent disregarding his responsibilities to a child? The senseless violence that has permeated Chicago neighborhoods as well as neighborhoods around the country can be traced directly back to the lack of not only a positive male role model within the home and in the community, but the lack of a family unit at all.

As an advocate for prison reform I have and will continue to point out injustices throughout our legal system, however as a man first and foremost I will call it how I see it. For the most part, perpetrators of inner city violent crime are not forty something males. Old men aren’t riding around with their buddies gunning up public parks. Young adults and teenagers, (more specifically young males) are the trigger pullers, but the accomplices are the men & women that brought them into being. How, one may ask? There are great responsibilities in becoming a parent. Parents play a direct role in whatever their children become; positive or negative. When parents are not actively participating in the development of their children; someone or something else will. Whether its music videos, video games, neighborhood drug dealers or other children, the void will be filled.

As with most crime, inner-city violence is committed in areas that the perpetrator is familiar with. The serial killer plots his attack against members of his own community, not only because he is easily camouflaged but also because of his ability to remain close to that which he despises. The same applies to inner city violence. A young man grows to loathe his current socio-economic situation. Without positive familial reinforcement, he seeks that what is lacked in the home from the streets. In the streets the young man acquires a warped sense of morality, justice and values from other like-minded youths.

Several parents have abandoned proven effective traditional methods of raising children and embraced time outs or becoming our child’s friend. Other parents have given up “parenting”, all together allowing children to simply “grow up” forcing them to deal with the harsh realities of life on their own. Many parents have turned away from their own morally sound upbringing to indulge in lifestyles that accentuate the pleasures of “immediate gratification,” thereby destroying the likelihood of establishing a respectful parent-child relationship. These factors, combined with the massive numbers of fathers that are currently incarcerated, create a climate ripe for the senseless violence that we see, read & hear about today.

The socio-economic stresses attached to inner city life can be challenging but not insurmountable. The challenges are increased when a child has to face the world without the vital tools for success that only caring parents can provide. Needing support to handle day to day struggles, the child turns to his peers for assistance. Misguided youth become misguided young adults who are ready, willing and able to misguide their peers as well as other youths in the community. Parents have allowed themselves to be replaced by these peers, as well as, by various forms for entertainment such as video games, television and music lyrics. Through constant exposure to these forms of media that emphasize misogyny, violence and indifference toward life and without responsible parents to enforce the value of true morality and work ethics, the child forms a warped, “code of ethics.”

The lack of parental guidance denies a child of the ability to deal with day to day obstacles in a rational manner. The ability to use logic instead of emotions to solve problems is a skill that falls within a parent’s scope of duties. Without the capability to apply logic to a difficult situation and arrive at a reasonable conclusion, the emotionally charged child engages in a violent confrontation often ending in tragedy for an innocent victim.

Emotionally Charged Youth May Mean Tragedy for Innocent Victims

Without self-respect, success of any type is unattainable.  A child that does not respect himself cannot and will not respect parents or authority figures. If the child continues on this self-destructive path of disrespectful behavior, negative contact with law enforcement is inevitable. It is these young people; lacking the respect for self and others and possessing a false sense of entitlement, that commit the majority of community based violent crime. Self-respect, or the child’s lack of it, falls squarely upon the shoulders of the parents. Self-respect creates strong moral character; strong moral character prevents many incidents of senseless violent crime from ever being committed.

Community based violence is the result of many components; I would dare to say that most, if not all, can be traced back to ineffective parenting.  It would interest me to see just how many of the perpetrators actually come from homes where both parents had an active role in their childhood development. Parents must regain the power that they have given to the streets, the TV and the radio by becoming parents again. The only way to end the violence that infect our communities is for parents to not just talk but to show children through their actions that true success must be attained through education and work. Morality & integrity cannot be found in the street and are not the responsibility of teachers and schools but must be addressed in the home. Respect of self and of others cannot be found in books but must be conveyed from the hearts & minds of parents to their children. To solve the problem of violence in our neighborhoods, parents must raise their children instead of allowing them to simply grow up, therefore, in an effort to save our communities; parental guidance is suggested.

THIS JUST IN….. IT IS NOW LEGAL TO SHOOT BLACK MALES AT WILL

“NOT GUILTY” Verdict in Florida has Affirmed the Legality of the Profiling & Murdering of African-American Men

Saturday, July 13, 2013; a Florida jury of 6 women has affirmed that it is legal and recommended that white men feel free to instigate a fight, lose the fight then shoot unarmed Black men. In one of the worst miscarriages of justices in American history, George Zimmerman has been acquitted in his shooting of unarmed child, Trayvon Martin. The 6 person jury found that Zimmerman was within his rights to disobey 911 orders, stalk, engage in a fight then ultimately murder a child of color. A dismal cloud of grey hangs over Florida and over America. The just us membership has once again flexed the power of its membership against the African-American people.

Contributing to this travesty was a piss poor attempt by the prosecuting attorneys of Seminole County. At no point, during the course of this trial did the prosecutors even attempt to tell the court or the world the real story. What was told, were the ridiculous accounts of the murder that Zimmerman gave to police and to the media. His lies and inconsistencies were obvious to all those who have paid the slightest amount of attention over the last year and a half. Standing idly by as the defense twisted the truth, the prosecutors did nothing to present any semblance of a sincere effort to find justice for the slain youth. The prosecution simply “threw the fight,” and allowed a child murderer to remain free.

As the wheels of the judicial system continue to turn and grind the African-American people, we can now add one more injustice into the annals of American history. As the system continues to use the “War on Drugs,” for the mass incarceration of Black men, we are continually reminded for whom this country’s justice system was designed. On February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida an unarmed child lay slain in the rain, Trayvon’s soul cried out for justice; justice that is supposed to be blind. On Saturday, July 13, 2013 lady justice regained her sight and said,” no matter how far you THINK you’ve come, Black man, justice is not now, never have been and will never be for you, Black man, just us”.

Police Chase Vampire in Sacramento

Looking out of his apartment window Richard saw the “Goth” kids sitting in the green park grass talking. “Fucking role players,” he said to himself. “They don’t know what it’s really like,” he grunted to himself in an angry tone, just barely audible. The involuntary shaking he was currently experiencing had gotten worse throughout the day.  “They choose to live this way; I didn’t have a fucking choice!” Richard continued as his low mumble became a yell. He became frenzied as he rummaged through the filthy apartment.  Sifting through the carcasses of small animals and rodents he had assembled, he finally found one that was to his liking. Standing in the middle of the room, he held his head back, and drained into his mouth the animal’s last drops of blood. Mentally frenzied, he hurried about his apartment looking for more blood. He could feel the blood within his veins gradually turning to dust. “I have to stop it!” He yelled out loud. Just when all seemed hopeless he spotted the squirrel he killed earlier. “Yes,” he exclaimed as he cut the rodent open and devoured his entrails.

He thought back at how they laughed at him when he tried to explain the theft of his pulmonary artery. At the hospital, they scoffed at him when he shared fantasies about killing rabbits with the staff. Sitting in his favorite chair; a urine scented, blood soaked, easy chair, placed in the center of the room, he remembered how his roommates had given him an ultimatum about moving. Wanting to be rid of Richard so desperately, they left him and the apartment. He was glad that they were gone, now he was free to bring the animals in that he needed. He was now free to concoct his special life giving recipe. Richard had found that mixing the raw organs with Coca-Cola in a blender and drinking the concoction prolonged his life.  Richard, now relaxed, could feel his heart expanding back to its normal size; breathed a sigh of relief now that he also felt his blood starting to re-liquefy. He looked over the fine array of creatures that had unwittingly helped him prolong his life and began to sob. In his mind he knew that the only blood that would cure him permanently was human blood.

The conspiracy that he had fallen victim to so many years ago was now beginning to take its toll on him; so he thought. Reading about the exploits of the Hillside Strangler; Richard felt that he too had fallen prey to the same despicable alien experiments and that they were both kindred spirits of sorts. Breaking into a hysterical laughter, he recalled the looks of horror on his neighbor’s faces after he’d devoured their beloved rabbits, dogs and cats. Smearing their life giving blood all over his pale white frame brought Richard to an unparalleled state of euphoria. He wondered what level of ecstasy a bath of human blood would elevate him to.

Feeling erotic, Richard disrobed and slit open all of the remaining animal carcasses. Caressing himself with the rotting animal parts he began developing his plan for attaining his crimson gold from a human contributor. The attempts he had made previously had ended in failure. The first time Richard shot wildly into the home of a Sacramento woman. A police search of the woman’s home found the slug in her kitchen; no one was harmed. The next attempt came in the form of a drive by shooting. The victim was Ambrose Griffin, a 51-year-old engineer and father of two, who was helping his wife bring groceries into their home. Richard had killed him but could not collect the “ingredients” from his victim to prepare his elixir. Lying naked on the floor of his apartment covered in blood and rotting animal flesh he devised his next plan.

Walking through a neighborhood to enact his strategy, he attempted to break into a home but found the door locked so he left. As he walked he spotted an old high school classmate, Nancy Holden. He asked Nancy for a ride, but frightened by his disheveled appearance, she declined and drove away. Richard continued down the street.  Arriving at the home of a young married couple, he broke in and stole some of their valuables. Angered by the woman’s absence, Richard urinated into a drawer of their infant’s clothing, and defecated on their son’s bed. The couple came home while he was still in the house; the husband attacked him, but Richard escaped.

Angered by his lack of success Richard continued walking until he came across the home of David and Teresa Wallin. Spotting the pregnant Teresa carrying garbage from her home he deduced that the home probably lacked a male presence. Gaining entry to her home, Richard shot the woman once in the hand and twice in the head; killing her instantly. Giddy with the obvious success of his objective, Richard dragged her body to her bedroom and raped it post-mortem while repeatedly stabbing it with a butcher knife. When he had finished, he carved the corpse open and removed several of her internal organs, using a bucket to collect the blood and then taking it in the bathroom to bathe in it. He then sliced off her nipple and using an empty yogurt container as a drinking glass, drank her blood; before leaving, he went into the yard, found a pile of dog feces, and returned to stuff it into the corpse’s mouth and throat. Moving quickly through the night, he returned to his apartment. Reclining peacefully, he continued to devour the fruits of his labor and smeared the remains on his exposed frail physique.

On January 23rd of 1978 Richard awoke in extreme pain. “It’s happening again,” he yelled aloud! Richard felt the sensation of what he perceived to be the excruciating pain of his heart shrinking. His deteriorated mental state allowed him to see his blood turning to dust before his own eyes. Frantically, he thought of a way to save his life. Richard purchased two puppies from a neighbor, both of which he immediately killed and drank the blood of. He then left the bodies, like discarded soda cans, on the neighbor’s front lawn.

Four days later the unrelenting sensation returned to Richard and he knew that mere puppies would do nothing to quill the pain. On January 27th, Richard entered the home of 38-year-old Evelyn Miroth, who was babysitting her 22-month-old nephew, David.  Evelyn’s six-year-old son Jason, and Dan Meredith, a neighbor was also in the home. Richard confronted Dan first and fatally shot him twice in the head at point-blank range. Hearing the commotion, Jason ran to his mother’s bedroom, where he was found and fatally shot twice in the head. Richard then found Evelyn in the bathroom and fatally shot her once in the head. He dragged her corpse onto the bed, where he simultaneously sodomized it and drank its blood from a series of slices to the back of the neck. He then shot 22-month-old David in the head.

Richard’s debilitating mental capacity enforced his delusions of his shrinking heart. His depraved mental state formulated only one solution. He stabbed Evelyn’s corpse at least half a dozen times in the anus, the knife penetrating her uterus. He stabbed her in a series of vital points on the body, which caused blood from her internal organs to pool into her abdomen, which he then sliced open and drained into a bucket; he then consumed all of the blood.   Still unsatisfied, Richard retrieved David’s corpse, split its skull open in the bathtub, and consumed some of the brain matter.

A knock on the door startled Richard, a play date young Jason had planned came calling. Richard grabbed Dan’s car keys and David’s corpse and left through a side door. The child saw Richard leaving and informed a neighbor. The neighbor broke into the Miroth home where he discovered the bodies and contacted the authorities. The police found that the perpetrator left perfect hand & fingerprints in blood on the walls, as well as footprints on the floor.  At home Richard removed David’s penis and used it as a straw through which he sucked the blood out of the body. He then sliced the corpse open and consumed several internal organs and made smoothies out of others. He finally disposed of the corpse at a nearby church.

For a week Richard was at home secluded and oblivious to the on goings around him and concerning him. Still marveling in his “accomplishments” a knock on the door startled him. Richard adamantly refused the police detective’s request for an interview and slammed the door. Unbeknownst to Richard was the ballistic results that linked him directly to each murder as well as the fingerprint evidence that led the police straight to him. Richard, dressed in his bloody clothes, left his apartment for the last time. Officers arrested him and found inch of his apartment to be soaked or covered in blood. Body parts, mainly intestines were found in Tupperware bowls as well as on shelves in the refrigerator.  “I was forced to do this,” he told the officers at the station. “I need a radar gun then I could show you,” he told FBI profiler Robert Ressler. He continued, “With a radar gun I can go arrest the Nazis and UFOs and THEY can stand trial for the murders.” Richard than proceeded to hand Ressler a hand full of macaroni and cheese that he had saved in his pants pocket.

On May 8th, 1979 Richard was found guilty of 6 counts of first degree murder. The defense asked for a clemency hearing, in which a judge determined that he was not legally insane and was subsequently sentenced to die in the gas chamber. On December 26, 1980, a guard doing cell checks found Richard lying awkwardly on his bed, not breathing. An autopsy determined that he committed suicide with an overdose of prison doctor-prescribed antidepressants that he had been saving up for the last few weeks.

Such was the life, crimes and death of Richard Trenton Chase; the Vampire of Sacramento.

The Despicable Acts of The Wannabe Mom

The most beautiful event in the world is the birth of a child, in stark contrast, the most evil and despicable act in the world is the murder of a child. As I read & research various topics to post here for your enlightenment & enjoyment, I came across an act so inherently evil that there must be a special place in hell reserved for this woman. Even if souls of the condemned were to fill Hades into no occupancy status there will be a room filled with the hottest fire and brimstone set aside with the name Tiffany Hall boldly emblazoned on the threshold.

Tiffany Hall and Jimella Tunstall had been the best of friends. Having grown up together and attended the same schools, the two were thought to be inseparable. As many young women do, both girls had begun creating families early in their adulthood. Despite previous issues with her own children, Hall was a trusted baby-sitter to Tunstall’s children. On September 15, 2006, this friendship came to a tragic end.

During a routine visit all hell broke loose when Tiffany Hall viciously attacked Tunstall with a table leg. Hall beat Tunstall mercilessly in the head with the table leg until she was unconscious. She then duct taped her mouth, hands & feet and drug her incapacitated friend to the bathroom, laid her in the tub then proceeded to remove the unborn fetus from her abdomen. Using a pair of scissors, Hall performed a crude Caesarean section on Tunstall. The procedure proved fatal for both mother and child.  The child was stillborn and Tunstall bled to death in the bathtub. Hall then wrapped the corpse of her deceased friend in a shower curtain and hid her in a plastic container in the basement. Eventually Hall dragged the body outside and left her in to a lot with high weeds behind the house where she was found.

Unsure of what to do with the deceased fetus, Hall contacted the police in Frank Holten Park in East St. Louis. Hall told the officers that she had gone into labor and gave birth to a stillborn child. Her story to one officer is that she had gone in to labor during a rape; another officer was told that the miscarriage came while engaging in consensual sex. At the hospital, the baby showed no signs of trauma and Hall would not let doctors examine her.

Three days later, Hall visited the father of two of Tunstall’s children and the unborn child. The father was caring for all the children. Hall told the father that Jimella sent her to pick up the children and her vehicle. Knowing about the years of friendship between the two women, the father didn’t think twice about releasing them to her care. Hall brought the children to Tunstall’s home where she proceeded to drug them and killed them one by one. Under the pretense of giving them a bath, Hall drowned each of them, DeMond Tunstall, 7, Ivan Tunstall-Collins 2, and Jinella Tunstall, 1; in the same tub that their mother met her untimely demise in. She hid their dead bodies in a washer and dryer in the apartment.

Under the impression that he was about to be a father, Hall’s boyfriend returned from active duty in the Navy to attend what he thought was his child’s funeral. Naming the baby, Taylor Horn, Hall made funeral arrangements with L. King Funeral Chapel. According to records, Hall called the funeral home minutes after services were to start, asking if she could reschedule for a different day so more relatives could attend. At the time of the call, only two people were in attendance. Hall herself showed up two hours late, ultimately signing an affidavit for the funeral home stating that the child was hers. It was during the funeral that Hall confided with her boyfriend that the child wasn’t his nor hers and that she in fact had killed her friend and taken her baby. She was arrested after he reported the confession to police.

Upon her arrest Hall confessed to the police about the murder of Tunstall. She was arraigned and held on $5 million dollar bond. Her arrest prompted an immediate search for the 3 children. After receiving a tip police questioned Hall again; she then admitted murdering the children also. The bodies of the children were found in Ms. Tunstall’s washer & dryer.  In an effort to keep Hall off of death row she entered a guilty plea in a deal that allows her to avoid the death penalty. Tiffany Hall was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
